How to wear a medical mask
What to do to make a medical mask protect, not harm? Indeed, more recently, almost none of us was faced with the need to delve into such nuances. WHO regularly recalls that such protection is effective if used properly. Which side should I wear a mask when to change and can I wear it twice? We tell!
Which side to wear the mask?
A conventional medical mask has two sides that are slightly different in appearance. One is a light dressing that acts as an air filter. The second is darker (blue or blue), with antibacterial impregnation.
It is believed that if you want to protect yourself from infection outside, put on the mask with an antibacterial layer (blue) to you. And if you are already sick, then do not infect others and turn it over to the bright side. As you can see, she does not have a front side and a backside in the classical sense!
How to wear
First, be sure to wash your hands with warm water and soap or treat them with an antiseptic. When you bring the mask to your face, the upper edge should cover the nose, and the lower - the mouth and chin. Clamp the wire-retainer on the nose, which provides a snug fit mask.
Spread the mask so that it is well pressed to the face from all sides. If it is too big, tighten the elastic bands behind the ears. You can tie small knots on them to adjust the fit. After that, do not touch your face with your hands!
How to take off the mask
Wash your hands again or treat them with an antiseptic. Remove the mask only by loops or ties because all bacteria and viruses accumulate on the front. Do not throw it in a bucket just like that - first put it in a plastic bag. After all, wash or treat your hands again!
How long can I wear a mask?
An effective medical mask remains only 2 hours. After this time, it gradually loses its protective properties, and after 4 hours it becomes completely dangerous. If the mask is wet or for some reason has been damaged - change it immediately!
The fact is that the barrier material is moistened and heated by respiration. And this is an ideal environment for the development of bacteria and viruses, so walking in a disposable medical mask for days on end is unacceptable!
Is it possible to wash a medical mask?
Disposable medical masks are truly disposable - this is not a joke, not a myth or reinsurance. They should never be washed, disinfected, cleaned, washed or ventilated. They irrevocably lose their protective properties and turn into a hotbed of disease.
How to wear reusable masks
If you have a fabric or cotton-gauze mask, they are also changed 2-4 hours later. If the material has become noticeably wet earlier (depending on the weather) - then more often. But they really can be washed and put on again.
If you wear non-woven filters or a layer of cotton wool - change them every time. But wash the fabric base itself in the machine at 60 degrees or rinse it well with ordinary soap in warm water. To be sure, you can treat the mask with an alcohol antiseptic and dry it before use.
Are the masks enough to not get infected?
Remember that a medical mask is only one of the measures that you need to not catch the coronavirus! The mask itself is not a panacea and not 100% protection, but it accurately removes the level of viral load and will become a barrier in direct contact with the patient. And at least it will not let you touch your face with dirty hands.
Do not forget to wash your hands regularly and use antiseptic agents. Avoid crowded places and maintain a safe distance of 1.5-2 meters. Compliance with basic hygiene rules is the first and most important thing that everyone should do to fight the epidemic!
